STURP Peer-Reviewed Lab Papers Published

United StatesScience

Following the 1978 STURP examination, researchers published a series of peer-reviewed papers reporting laboratory results. These publications focused on two core areas: the chemistry of the image and the chemistry of the bloodstains.

Blood Chemistry

Laboratory analyses reported chemical signatures consistent with blood and related compounds, and documented properties of the reddish stains distinct from image areas.

Image Chemistry

The image was described as a superficial discoloration of the Shroud’s fibers, with no evidence of pigments or dyes as the cause.

Together, these papers provided the first peer-reviewed scientific baseline for ongoing study and debate.
