VP-8 Image Analyzer Reveals 3D Properties

Colorado Springs, USAScience

In 1976–1977, researchers used a VP-8 image analyzer to study photographs of the Shroud. Unlike ordinary photographs, the Shroud image produced a coherent three-dimensional relief when processed through the VP-8, suggesting that image intensity corresponds to distance between the Shroud and the body.

This observation became one of the key empirical features motivating deeper scientific investigation, and it was later quantified and analyzed in peer-reviewed studies.
